Veneer tape is a type of adhesive tape that is commonly used to hold veneer sheets in place while they are being applied to a surface. Removing veneer tape can be a bit tricky, but here are some steps you can follow:
Apply heat: Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to apply heat to the tape. The heat will soften the adhesive, making it easier to remove. Hold the heat source about 6 inches away from the tape and move it around constantly to avoid overheating the wood.
Use a putty knife: After heating the tape, use a putty knife to gently lift the edge of the tape. Do not force the putty knife under the tape or you may damage the wood. Once you have lifted the edge, slowly peel the tape off the wood.
Apply solvent: If the tape is particularly stubborn or if there is a lot of adhesive residue left on the wood, you can apply a solvent like mineral spirits or denatured alcohol to dissolve the adhesive. Apply the solvent with a cloth or cotton swab, and let it sit for a few minutes before gently scraping the tape off with the putty knife.
Clean the surface: Once you have removed the tape, use a clean cloth and some soapy water to clean the surface of the wood. Be sure to remove any adhesive residue or solvent from the wood to avoid damaging the finish.
Sand the surface: If there is any remaining adhesive or tape residue, you can sand the surface of the wood with fine-grit sandpaper. Be careful not to sand too hard, or you may damage the wood.
Remember to always wear gloves and protective eyewear when handling solvents, and to work in a well-ventilated area.
